  1. 1770-1827. German composer and pianist. His
  2. mastery of musical expression in every genre
  3. made him the dominant influence on
  4. 19th-century music. Beethoven`s repertoire
  5. includes concert overtures; the opera Fidelio
  6. 1805, revised 1814; five piano concertos and
  7. two for violin (one unfinished); 32 piano
  8. sonatas, including the Moonlight 1801 and
  9. Appassionata 1804-05; 17 string quartets; the
  10. Mass in D (Missa solemnis) 1824; and nine
  11. symphonies, as well as many youthful works.
  12. He usually played his own piano pieces and
  13. conducted his orchestral works until he was
  14. hampered by deafness 1801; nevertheless he
  15. continued to compose. 
  16. Born in Bonn, the son and grandson of
  17. musicians, Beethoven became deputy organist
  18. at the court of the Elector of Cologne at
  19. Bonn before he was 12; later he studied under
  20. Haydn and possibly Mozart, whose influence
  21. dominated his early work. From 1809, he
  22. received a small allowance from aristocratic
  23. patrons. 
  24. Beethoven`s career spanned the transition
  25. from Classicism to Romanticism. Of his
  26. symphonies the best-known are the Third
  27. (Eroica) 1803-04, originally intended to be
  28. dedicated to Napoleon with whom Beethoven
  29. became disillusioned, the Fifth 1807-08, the
  30. Sixth (Pastoral) 1803-08, and Ninth (Choral)
  31. 1815-24, which includes the passage from
  32. Schiller`s `Ode to Joy` chosen as the
  33. national anthem of Europe.
